Waldeck sits in the Swift Current River Valley, about 18 kilometres northeast of Swift Current on the Trans-Canada Highway. Its name is a German word meaning "Wooded Corner," and the community is probably named for the willows that grew along the banks of Swift Current Creek.
Settlement began in 1903, when the Canadian Government opened a tract of land running from Swift Current Creek to Herbert. Among the first settlers were Rev. Klaas Peters and a Mr. Abraham, probably Abram Klassen, who arrived in 1908. Waldeck incorporated as a village on December 23, 1913.
Most of the people in and around Waldeck are of Mennonite ancestry. The village also has a well-known footnote in its story: Elon Musk worked on a farm near Waldeck after coming to Canada from South Africa in the late 1980s.
